Los Angeles Issues
What is to be done in Mother Earth's Los Angeles to restore good health, and to realize a joyful future for our children and all creatures whom she welcomes here? The struggle to answer this question is the central challenge facing humans living in the Los Angeles region, today and for generations to come.
In as few words as possible, this page will attempt to define some of the immediate issues which give substance now to this struggle. I will do what I can; much more will be needed. What follows is a beginning. Please see as well the page titled Hearing Mother Earth, and the pages with which it links.
1) We have a desperate need for a new culture which is founded on the active understanding that Mother Earth, aware and self-aware, loving, willful, reproductive, regenerative, creative, communicative, and animate exists and that we are and have been, inescapably, a minor though significant part of her creation. We as communities and as individuals need to learn to hear her, to learn from her, and to meet her consequential concerns about us, within the generous tolerance which she affords us and all her creatures. Can this be done, in a matter of years, not decades or centuries?
2) Mother Earth tells us that the dams and other significant obstructions to her wild waters in the Los Angeles region will be taken away, by an orderly decommissioning and removal organized and carried out by our human communities, or destroyed by other parts of her, in the near future. If we do not act, there will be, for us, terrible consequences. How can communities, most of whose members today would see this as nonsense, be peaceably persuaded that it is not only sensible, but vital? Moreover, how then can we survive and prosper consuming only that portion of Los Angeles's wild water which may be rightfully ours? What human population can this portion sustain? It will surely be greatly reduced from the number who presently live here, but by how much?
3) Our current tools and technology are misguided and inappropriate. What we need are tools made simply of natural substances such as stone, clay, wood, bone, hide and fiber, taken directly from wilderness or modest, wild-bonded agriculture, fashioned by our own hand and natural tools, and returned to wilderness when exhausted. Guided by these Earth-centered principles, we are challenged to identify what specific tools and shaping methods are appropriate, and as nonviolent, legal opportunities permit, make and use these in our regional communities. Only then can a broader understanding and consensus around this sane, healthy technology be won.
4) Wildness is the unfolding of Mother Earth and the rest of the universe without the substantial influence of tools (in other words, artifacts). Humans, who are creatures of Mother Earth and therefore wildness, are also the only prolific producers of tools about whom we know with certainty. We have become so driven by this quality that we have suppressed our own essential wildness. If we are to continue to be an acceptable part of Mother Earth, we need to recover our understanding, respect and practice of this essence. We need to define the elements which will bring us to center our lives upon our humble role in wilderness, and through teaching and example move our communities to embrace this path. Some of these elements are described in this website, but these are only few of many.ss, are also the only prolific producers of tools about whom we know with certainty.
